Seems early this year.
I found this interesting article with a recipe that I will concoct up and use tomorrow.

Ongoing Maintenance:

Þ Water as necessary. During the growing season, water about every 7 to 10
days. Water deeply in order to encourage deep and sturdy root systems.

Þ Consider a drip irrigation system to minimize over spray on foliage. Water in the morning.

Þ Apply 100% organic fertilizers (ex. Sustane, Green Sense, etc.) every 60 to 90 days during the growing season. Start the program approximately two weeks before the last frost date and continue until six weeks before the earliest frost date for the season.

Þ Apply a foliar feeding at two week intervals. Use a mix of liquid Seaweed (1 ounce/gallon), Fish Emulsion (2 ounce/gallon) and a biostimulant (ex. Medina, Argrispon etc.)>

Þ Spray a mixture of Epsom salts (1 T/gallon) and chelated iron (per label) to occasionally darken foliage and offset iron chlorosis.

Þ Caution: Do not spray (for disease or liquid feeding) in the heat of the day. Wait until evening so that leaf burn will not occur.

Insects & Diseases:

Þ Generally, if old roses are unduly affected by insects and constantly have black spot and/or powdery mildew, check the following first:

-too much shade

-too little air circulation

-poorly drained soil

-inadequate bed preparation

-mulching is inadequate

Þ Aphids :

-blast off with water (hose and nozzle)

-soap and water (1 tsp/gal.)

-introduce beneficial insects (ladybugs, green lacewings)

-spray garlic/pepper tea (see recipes below)

Þ Spider mites:

-spray garlic/pepper tea (see recipes below) every 3 days for 9 days (3
applications)

-spray Seaweed (1 ounce/gal.) and Fish Emulsion (2 ounce/gal.)

Þ Black spot/powdery mildew:

-At the first sign of black spot or powdery mildew, spray with a mix of baking
soda (4 tsp./gal.) plus soap (1 tsp/gal.) and water (1 gal.). Spray lightly on the
foliage every 3 days until the problem is under control.

Recipes:

Þ Garlic/Pepper Tea: Liquefy 2 bulbs of garlic and 2 hot peppers in a blender 1/3 full of water. Strain the solids out and add enough water to the garlic/pepper juice to make a gallon of concentrate. Just thought it should be saved.....

"Finally some time. I have put together a little plan and even took some pictures from my own garden, but I can't seem to get Photobucket to work to upload my pics to it. I will add the pictures later if I can.

Step 1 ~ Dig out the coreopsis. They will take over the garden if you let them. My suggestion would be to get a large pot and sink it into the ground where you want the coreopsis to be, then plant the coreopsis into the pot. The best is a clay pot, but it can be a plastic one too. Just make sure it has drainage holes in the bottom. Use a fairly big pot and fill it with the coreopsis and soil. It will allow to coreopsis to grow, but remain contained. The garden is too small to have such an aggressive plant go wild.

Step 2 ~ add new soil and compost, raising the garden bed a few inches. Work around the rose. It would look really nice to have this bed edged in brick. You can buy inexpensive paving bricks at Home Depot or Lowes for around $1-$2 each, dig a small trench around the garden, about 1 1/2 inches deep and lay the bricks on their side in the trench. Fill the dirt back around the bricks and voila, instant edging. That way you can keep the good soil in the garden and have plants spill over the bricks. Looks really nice and is good for the plants.

Step 3 ~ replant the potted coreopsis into the back corner, where the driveway meets the house. It will probably take up a space about 2' x 2'.

Step 4 ~ now you get to add plants. I would suggest adding a small shrub, some perennials and a few annuals. This is where I need a scanner so I could draw a plan for you!

Starting from the left corner, where your coreopsis is, and working towards your door. The back row of plants would be the coreopsis, then next would be daisies (look great beside coreopsis! http://www.photovault.com/Link/Orders/Flora/Flowers/show.asp?tg=OFFVolume07/OFFV07P09_01.0754), then purple coneflower (echinecea http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/wildseed/33/33.1.html), then your existing rose. Beside the rose you could plant a Mock Orange shrub (http://www.bucknur.com/acatalog/product_10257.html), then right beside the door plant a group of 3 daylilies (pick something bright & fragrant )

Then back at the left side, now in front of the coreopsis, I would plant a group of lavender (http://www.gardenguides.com/articles/lavender.htm), probably 5 - 7 small plants. Next, working our way back towards your door, I would plant a group of Moss Phlox (http://www.wildflowers.reach.net/mossphlox.html), which you would plant close to the edge of the bricks so that they spill over. In front of the rose, you can plant Dianthus (http://www.simplybeautifulgardens.com/plant_pages/dianthus.htm), to tie in your garden around the stump ~ probably needing 3-5 plants. In front of the Mock Orange, plant another group of Lavender (probably 3 plants). Then beside/front of the daylilies, plant another group of dianthus ~ probably 3 plants.

Now, some annuals to put in to fill up spaces could be Cosmos, Nemesia (http://www.simplybeautifulgardens.com/plant_pages/nemesia.htm or Marigolds. All come in white, yellow, red or purple.

It would look great to have a tall urn on the other side of your door. Something planted with ivy, bacopa (http://www.simplybeautifulgardens.com/plant_pages/bacopa.htm) & red & yellow flowers (like Nemesia, which have a wonderful scent)"

Let's see if this works.............
Garden Pictures taken May 11, 2004

Olga bloomed today!
That is MY own picture you are linking on. It is not too hard to understand why coffee is so loved by my plants since I get a kick from drinking this stuff why shouldn’t they? These days it is wise to drink only organically grown coffee. Coffee is second only to cotton (both start with a c?) in what they chemically are being sprayed with. Organically grown coffee is rich in minerals, phosphorus, iron, calcium and a variety of other trace minerals depending on the area of the world and the soil it is grown in.

Old time organic farmers know the true value of organic coffee and coffee grinds in their organic gardens. One of my first recollections was of my mother feeding her plants dried coffee grinds. I also remember her saying that you never throw your cold coffee away but sprayed it on the plants, sugar, milk and all. She would say that she never knew a plant that didn’t like coffee and neither have I! I myself tell people to make one batch of coffee for themselves and make the second batch (from the same coffee grinds) for your plants!

Here are a few interesting ways to use coffee in your garden
1....Coffee and compost go hand in hand. adding coffee grinds to your compost pile or bin will increase its mineral content, and help to acidify the soil, (keep the PH down).

2...Coffee as a soil additive by adding dried coffee grinds to soil and turning over soil then mulching. many plants especially like coffee grinds mixed into their base soil. Plants like roses and vegetables like tomatoes will do well with coffee grinds. Also plants that like acid soil such as gardenias, azaleas, etc. will also like coffee grinds.

3...Hot Coffee can be sprayed directly on most insects and caterpillars, grasshoppers, etc. an dit will kill them while not damaging the plants. When you spray with the hot coffee, water is cooled down upon contact with the air enough to damage the insects but not the plants. Insects require only a small change in the body temp to die. Hot coffee will also damage fungus spores upon contact. To increase effectiveness of hot coffee you can add a dash of milk, or sugar or soap or Tabasco or essential oil.

4..Hot Coffee and hot compost equals hot tea! This mixture can be made by allowing your compost tea to sit for a few days. It should be sitting inside a glass bottle allowing the sun to shine thru it. This increases the bacterial levels as well as the energy levels of the tea not to mention the actual temp of the water. Then you make a batch of hot coffee for yourself then make a batch for your plants. Mix the hot coffee with the warm compost tea equally (1 quart hot coffee equals 1 quart compost tea) and use immediately at full strength. Add a dash of Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap as a wetting agent. This mixture will control all forms of fungus as well as most insects.

5..Cold Coffee can be foliar sprayed on most plants without any damage to their leaves but care must be taken with the flowers as coffee may discolor it. I would add a dash of Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap to this mix as well as a dash of milk and sugar.

6.. Coffee, Soap and Tabasco sauce is another mixture that you can use to control pests
eating your flowers.

So the next time you make that batch of coffee, take a look at your plants, maybe they are trying to tell you something!

Yours
Andy Lopez
The Invisible Gardener

Welcome to my garden

Kathryn's new blog to post information, a garden journal, landscaping ideas, my journey through life as a garden designer.
Wow, that title sounds cool.
So, welcome to Kathryn, The Garden Designer's blog.
